Happy Thanksgiving from everyone here at HCWAS! We are so thankful to be part of such a caring community that always rises to the occasion when we have animals in need and supports our vision to improve the future of homeless pets in the area.

We are CLOSED for intakes and adoptions today but will be back tomorrow, ready to help pets find their new families! We have a small dedicated team going in to care for the animals today.

Meet handsome Norris! This three year 63 pound guy was brought to the shelter with bite wounds on his legs. Those have healed and he is now actively searching for a best bud for life. He doesn't ask for much, just someone to love him and that will let him be the center of their universe. Norris would prefer not to share his home with other animals or young children. He knows some basic commands and would love to learn more. Norris finds the shelter very stressful and we would love to find his forever home soon! Meet Clyde! This 5 month old kitten is without his partner in crime and is searching for a new best friend. He is a playful friendly kitten who would love to meet you. Meet Abby! She is kind of a rockstar here at the shelter. 🤩 She has several boyfriends and can be frequently found frolicking in the play yard with one of them. She does love to play and would love a home with another dog with a similar play style. Abby is three years old and 63 pounds. She is reported to be housebroken and good with children. Merchant is a little blue. Why, you ask? He just checked our storage buildings and we are low on dog food! 😯 Can you help restock our supply and bring a smile back to his face? We feed Purina dry food. Food can be dropped off or shipped to the shelter at 1901 James River Rd Huntington, WV 25701. While Merchant was checking our buildings, he noticed the weather is starting to get cold and he began to worry about all the outdoor cats that need to fend for themselves in the elements. What a considerate guy he is! We told him we would ask for heated cat houses like the ones pictured over on our Facebook page to help them out too. Help us keep the cats safe and warm this winter!

Gabby is a 5-6 month old female, estimated to have been born sometime May of 2021. She was brought to the shelter as a stray. She is playful, sweet, and loves to cuddle. She makes all kinds of kitty biscuits and drools when she's happy snuggles up with her foster mom. She is currently fostered with other cats. Gabby would make a great addition to any family and is accepting adoption applications now!

We love a good before and after story!
Larry was very fearful at the shelter and tried his best to stay hidden away from the noise and activity. After seeing our plea for a foster home, two great foster families stepped up for Larry and offered him a quiet place to decompress and recover from a dental and neuter surgery. He blossomed in foster care and we were able to get to know his true personality. Learning his likes and dislikes helped us to place him in a new home where we hope he will be given the best chance to succeed.
