Little old-man Brady is safe with F.U.R.!

On Monday last week, we received word from Pookey at Putnam County that a senior citizen had come to surrender their 15 year old chihuahua, recognizing they were unable to care for him any longer. This little Romeo swept us off our feet with his no-teeth, shivering chi energy. He was understandably afraid, as he processed the scary reality that he wasn’t going back to the only home we think he had ever known.

You’re safe with us now little guy! ♥️♥️♥️

Scrappy is adopted!

Another special adoption story for this week. Scrappy came to F.U.R. in horrific condition, a crusty shell of a puppy.

Louie came to F.U.R. after being found tied up to a commercial generator in Putnam County earlier this year. He too was a scabby husk of what a healthy pup should be.

In the process of sharing Scrappy’s story, Louie’s parents took notice, and thought perhaps their home could be his perfect landing pad as well. The Opdyke-Johnson household now holds the hearts of both our formerly-crusty boys. We are so thankful to them for opening up their home to not one, but two of our special rescue cases.

Louie and Scrappy are now set for a lifetime of cuddles, playtime and love. Happy tails boys!

Marci is adopted!

This special girl came to F.U.R after an arduous start. Putnam shelter staff initially brought her to the University of Florida for care, after she was discovered near the boat docks gravely wounded. Eventually, she required amputation surgery to save her life.

Marci waited for her perfect fit, and landed in the home of someone could appreciate her resiliency better than we could have ever imagined or dreamed up. She was adopted by a family that includes an incredible daughter who happens to be an amputee, due to childhood cancer. It’s a beautiful thing to see a dog and a person so whole-heartedly understand one another. We are thrilled that Marci landed exactly where she belongs.

All our adoptions are special, but this one is especially meaningful. We send all our wishes for the happiest life possible to Marci (now Kiah) and her amazing new family.

Rescue story - Chanel and her babies ❤

F.U.R. received a call from a woman in a rural area asking for help with seven three-week old puppies, because she claimed their Mother dog was being “aggressive”. The rescue scrambled to get a plan together so we could rescue the puppies in question. When we arrived to remove the puppies, the Mama dog could not have been sweeter. Our rescuers proceeded to ask for more details on the “aggressive behavior” reported. This adult dog was living on a three foot chain, among her own filth, surrounded by a horrendous fly swarm. Her presumed water source was a baby pool filled with algae infested water.

It turns out the “aggressive behavior” was when she growled at the puppies who were trying to share her food. A starving adult dog, puppies in need of sustenance… a recipe for failure. That day, we left with the puppies, vowing to return for the dog we were told to leave behind on her chain. A few days later, once the puppies were settled in foster, the owner agreed to surrender Mama dog.

We named her Chanel and reunited her with her babies. Once she was in a safe space and no longer in desperate need of basic sustenance - she was able to be the amazing Mom we knew she could be.

Rosie is adopted! This pint size girl came to F.U.R. through ACPS as an emaciated puppy with ringworm, and has emerged on the other side as a perfect, chunky, pocket pittie.

Her foster Mom, Kim, and her fiancé Rick put in the hard work of lime dips and administering a host of medications to get her well. And now, sweet Rosie is set up in her forever home, where the forecast is non-stop sunshine.

We have had Scrappy in rescue for nearly 3 months. This handsome German Shepherd (looking) puppy is more than ready for his forever home! Scrappy loves children and other dogs. He is silly and sweet, always ready to play. He prefers no cats and would love a fenced yard to run around in.

He is making great progress on potty training, and is already crate trained. He loves a long afternoon of stick chewing and digging into a Kong filled with his favorite treat - peanut butter! His foster family has also started training him and he is doing very well with his basic commands, especially sit.

Toby and Tara checking in!

Toby and Tara came into the shelter in Putnam as a bonded pair. In rescue, bonded pairs can be difficult to place. Thankfully their “temporary foster” soon became a furever family.
