Habitat for Humanity of Calhoun County, Alabama

seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. We build with people in need regardless of race or religion. We welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds.

Our Calhoun County Habitat affiliate was incorporated March 18,1993. Mr. Bill Wright was our first Executive Director and continued in that capacity until he retired in 2003. We started construction on our first house in 1994. This house was dedicated March 1995. Since then we have built 141 new homes through the support of businesses, individuals, Churches, foundations and the many volunteers.

Habitat's partner families are key players in the home-building process, and are chosen based on three criteria:
1. Their level of need
2. Their ability to pay the no-profit, no-interest loan
3. Their willingness to become partners in the program

Habitat families are typical families. They work hard to invest hundreds of hours of their own labor - called "sweat Equity" - into building their Habitat house and the houses of others, they pay back a mortgage, and they create a loving and nuturing environment for their children.
