Since her last update, Astrid has had some interaction with her veterinarians. As those who have used Apoquel know, the initial dosage is reduced in half after two weeks. Astrid’s body was not prepared for that, and her skin inflammation and itching returned with a vengeance. Once informed, the Dermatologist returned her to the original dosage where she will remain until mid-December. Unfortunately, her scratching and biting caused some damage in areas that healed already but there is a vast improvement itch reduction and skin inflammation. Repeat skin scrapings by Astrid’s Primary Care Veterinarian revealed that while bacteria and yeast are still present, the amount is lower than previous results. Astrid’s lymph nodes (except for the slightly enlarged popliteals) have returned to normal size – an indicator that her immune system is rebuilding. Fur regrowth is obvious on the top of her paws and her pads are now smooth and pink. She will require frequent nail clippings to prevent self-inflected wounds. Astrid received a long-term antibiotic and will continue her antifungal medications for the next month. She will also be bathed twice a week with medicated shampoo. She is headed in the right direction!!
So, while all that medical stuff is going on, Astrid continued to reveal her personality. We believe that she was likely an outdoor or kennel dog. Her interactions with humans could have been better, she remains “head shy” and is still reluctant to come in through the door but these are improving. She started the “home redecorator” beagle activities by moving her little toys around the house and taking them outside. Astrid appears to be eager to meet new people but is still hesitant to allow them to touch her. She loves to “hunt” kibble hidden on the kitchen floor and has learned to catch treats tossed in her direction!! She remains sweet and docile, and we believe these hesitant behaviors will continue to improve over time. Watching her cuddle up in her new bed, roll over on her back and snore loudly was an enjoyable sight! All she needs is time and she will embrace her new life.
For this update, we thought we would let you know how Astrid’s health issues are progressing and then give you some insight on what Astrid has revealed to us about her.
The healing of Astrid’s skin issues is progressing very well. Her belly and feet are no longer red and enflamed, and she is regrowing some fur on her front paws!! To date, Astrid is no longer taking an antibiotic, her worming is complete, the Apoquel for itchiness is reduced and her ears are clean and nice and pink. As you will see in some of the pictures, Astrid is clearly exhibiting signs she is feeling much better. She sleeps very comfortably on her back, is very interested in house activities (especially the kitchen), chews on appropriate chews, explores the toy box , joins the resident beagles hunting kibble on the floor, and has expanded her territory to explore in the house. She is now 100% on her special skin diet and she loves her food which makes it very easy to medicate her – just place the meds in her food bowl. Overall, we think she is making huge strides.
We know Astrid is “head shy”, timid and makes minimal close eye contact. All these traits are getting much better as she feels physically better, safer and increases her confidence in her new surroundings. When she allows you to get close enough, she loves head, ear and back scratches but is still uncomfortable being held. She really wants you to give her affection but, at this point, she doesn’t trust herself to just let go and get some loving. Her biggest hurdle in her foster home in coming through the door. She may be used to a “doggie door” where she could easily come and go and learning how to live in a home is a totally different experience.
We’re not worried – we’ve seen so many positive changes in sweet Astrid that given time, she will be up on a lap all snuggled in while her human reads or watches TV. I’ll bet some of you have similar stories from the early days your new dog was in your home.

After receiving an email from a local shelter requesting rescue help for a little chihuahua mix named Brownie (yes yes we know he’s not a beagle!), we just couldn’t resist. Brownie was diagnosed as heartworm positive at the shelter, and we are currently working with our veterinarians to treat his case. In the meantime, he is in one of the best foster homes we have! Stay tuned for updates on little Brownie.
An update on Astrid's medical conditions:
Astrid had a busy week and a half visiting her Primary Care Veterinarian and Veterinary Dermatologist Specialist. We know now that Astrid is dealing with an allergic reaction that she’s had for a long time and was never addressed. On intake, her four paws were swollen, red and devoid of fur. Astrid’s belly and chest had crusty sores and no fur. She was so itchy she constantly scratched and had difficulty sleeping. Additionally, she had infections in both ears. What we were witnessing was due to the infections resulting from non-treatment of her allergy. All the while, she had “happy feet”, loved her food and wagged her tail constantly.
Our immediate goal for Astrid is to treat the secondary issues and rebuild her immune system. To accomplish this, Astrid is now on an antibiotic, anti-fungal, Apoquel to stop the itch and Selamectin for any other parasites. Her ear infections are being treated with Miconazole. Astrid has also been placed on a strict veterinary diet designed to help with skin problems.
Astrid is a real trooper, you’ll see in a couple of the pictures how her chest, while still furless, is much clearer and less inflamed. Her feet are not longer swollen and the redness is disappearing. The veterinarians have told us this is going to take approximately three months for her skin to clear and fur regrow. At that point, we can begin the search to identify what she is allergic to and think about vaccines, a dental and spay surgery.
Astrid is doing amazing well and seems to be enjoying her new life. We will continue to keep everyone informed and include pictures of her progress. Wish us well as Astrid continues her journey!
We wonder if any of your pups have had allergy issues. Maybe you would like to share your experiences with the rest of us. Thank you!
