Promoting the health, welfare and humane treatment of animals in Northwestern Vermont.

FCAR was originally established in 1964 by several area residents who wanted to help the growing numbers of abused animals in their community. Over the next 32 years the shelter would move from Castle Farm in Fairfield to the old Yandow Farm in Saint Albans, an old house on Woods Hill Road in Swanton, an old barn on Parsons Avenue in Saint Albans Town, and then the Air Force Base on Bellevue Hill in Saint Albans. It wasn't until 1996 when the shelter made its way to its current location at 30 Sunset Meadow in Saint Albans City. The 3500 square foot building was intended to comfortably house approximately 23 dogs and 30 cats; numbers which more often than not are far exceeded.

Franklin County Animal Rescue has grown from a totally volunteer effort by a small group of concerned residents to an incorporated 501c3 non-profit organization that is privately owned and receives no government funding. The future of FCAR depends totally on caring, generous individuals to ensure its ability to shelter these animals until they can find their rightly deserved loving permanent homes.
After 50 years as Franklin County Humane Society, in 2015 the name was changed to Franklin County Animal Rescue to better reflect the current mission and purpose of the shelter; a focus on the homeless cats and dogs of the community. In an effort to give the shelter a more current, updated image, the logo was redone as well.
