Walt Jones Memorial Project for Sussex County Habitat for Humanity

Our Annual Golf Outing at Midway Par 3 will once again feature both morning and afternoon rounds for 200 golfers. There will be a variety of contests and Bethany Blues will serve a BBQ lunch for all participants.

To raise enough money to fund construction of an entire Habitat home, approximately $100,000. All while having fun!

Walt Jones was the owner and operator of both the Old Landing Golf Course until 1979 and Midway Par 3 course prior to his passing in 2010. Walt was a legend and inspiration to all those in the area who follow the sport of golf. He generously donated use of the Midway Par 3 golf course for Habitat’s outing since its inception and his family has graciously offered to continue his legacy of giving. Walt’s grandson, Shaun Jones, founded this event in 2005 with the intention of raising enough money to sponsor an entire Habitat home.

Shaun single handedly organized the first 3 golf outings and pre-tournament mixers and mini-auctions. Building on his success, these events have evolved into a year long series of community fundraising efforts organized and supported by a group of dedicated committee members as listed below. Last year, over $67,000 was raised to sponsor a Habitat home, dedicated in memory of Walt Jones to Brandy Williams and her family in Georgetown Point.

Seeking to put God’s love into action, Sussex County Habitat for Humanity brings people together to help build homes, communities and hope. Sussex County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1991 and is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Every Habitat Partner family receives a “hand-up not a hand-out” and purchases their new home with a not-for-profit 30 year mortgage. Each adult in the family works 250 “sweat equity” hours towards their homes and other habitat partner families’ homes.
