Founded in 1987, The Humane Society of Schuyler County is a 501c3 not for profit organization dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in Schuyler County. Our mission is to eliminate pet overpopulation, prevent cruelty to animals, provide quality care for homeless animals, promote responsible pet ownership, and help the community to develop humane principles toward all animals.
To address this mission we offer a low-cost spay/neuter service for the dogs and cats of eligible area residents and provide spay/neuter certificates for use at participating veterinarians. County residents meeting income requirements and residents with feral cat populations are provided the opportunity to bring dogs and cats to the low cost spay/neuter clinics offered twice monthly.
We firmly believe that spay/neuter is the most effective means of reducing the problem of pet over population. Prior to August 1st, 2009 our efforts were focused on caring for and placing cats since there is no other organization in Schuyler County addressing this need. We also provide spay/neuter services and emergency medical funds for dogs.
The Humane Society operates a foster network to care for homeless cats and kittens as space allows. Adoptable cats and kittens can be seen at our Cat Shelter in Montour Falls, at PetSmart in Ithaca, by calling us at 594-2255 to schedule an appointment or by looking through our listing of adoptable cats and kittens. Dogs can be viewed online and you can also see our available dogs (and cats) on Monday - Friday mornings between 9 - noon, Saturday mornings, between 10 and 1 pm, and Sundays from 3-5 pm at 124 Marina Drive, Montour Falls. If that time isn't convenient, please call us to schedule an appointment.
We are funded primarily through donations, gifts, grants and fundraising efforts. We receive no county, state or government funding for our on- going operation. Nor do we receive funds from national animal welfare organizations. If you are interested in volunteering or making a donation please call us at 594-2255. We’ll put your skills or your donations to good use! We hope you enjoy your visit with us. And, do check back often to see what we’re up to and how you can become a part of it!
Thank you.
