Jim adopted Rambo a year ago, and he now splits his time between being a beach dog and mountain dog! During the winter, Rambo enjoys strolls along Sunset Beach and heads to Boone, NC during the summer, where he spends his days cooling off in the river. Rambo enjoys everyone Jim introduces him to, especially kids. Jim says, “He is a true shelter dog success story!”

Kitten season was once a time when our shelter was full of little ones for just a few months. This is no longer just a brief season; our shelter is inundated with kittens year-round. This year, we are experiencing an influx in the number of calls we receive DAILY in regards to kittens needing help. Kittens require more medical care than most adult cats. From vaccines and medications to formula, the cost adds up for caring for kittens. In addition to abandoned kittens needing our help, we have had an abundance of kittens born in our facility this year. Once those kittens had been weaned, some of the mother cats actually had to nurse multiple litters we received that were far too young to survive on their own. At times we received kittens with umbilical cords still attached. The reason these kittens are able to grow into healthy and happy cats is because of YOU! We have an amazing foster team providing the love and enrichment that is crucial for the kittens' development, and YOUR SUPPORT is why we are able to provide the necessary vet care and life-sustaining supplies for our kittens. Today’s featured #PetOfTheDay is Megan! Her adoption fee is being sponsored today by @atlanticheatingandcooling. Megan is a lovable lazy hound dog. While she enjoys rolling around in the grass, she likes to spend most of her day sprawled out on her bed. She is affectionate and would be content be doted upon all day. Megan enjoys the comfort of humans so much, she tends to have separation anxiety and be a bit of an escape artist when left alone. Megan is looking for a low-key home where she can spend most of her time relaxing on a couch.

Our hearts are exploding! Sweet Grayson stopped by the shelter to donate his piggy bank for #GivingTuesday! 💕Grayson’s love for animals has no limits. His visits to the shelter are always full of kindness and love. Please remember these animals are not up for adoption yet. The purpose of these posts are to reunite lost pets with their owners. Animals will be held for five days to allow an owner time to reclaim them. Wild cats; vicious dogs imposing a safety threat to shelter workers or visitors; badly injured, sick, or suffering animals requiring extensive treatment; and animals with highly contagious or fatal diseases are exempt from the five day impoundment, however. After the hold period, pending medical and behavioral assessment, animals may be available for adoption. All adoptions are on a first come - first serve basis. FIV+ cats are often overlooked and can face euthanasia at other shelters. We have cared for countless FIV+ cats and will continue to be an ally to these special cats like Little Man. FIV+ cats are often overlooked and we will always educate those unfamiliar with FIV in cats. FIV+ cats remain in our care until we get to celebrate their adoption day. Brittany adopted Vinny, formerly Huxley, over the summer, and he immediately fit in with the family! He and his big brother are best friends now, and everyone loves Vinny. He’s affectionate, sweet and a cuddle bug. Brittany days adopting him was one of the best decisions for her family.

Small. Weak. Malnourished.

Those are adjectives we never want to describe any animal as, let alone a puppy or kitten. Belle was born under a flea infested trailer, spending the first critical days of her life living in the dirt. Fleas and ants crawled on her and bit her countless times, resulting in sores covering her body. Her mother had little interest in her, depriving Belle of the necessary nutrition puppies receive from their mother. Once under our care, and with the help of an amazing foster, Belle began to heal and experience all the joys life has to offer a puppy.

Whether it’s caring for an animal coming from a poor environment like Belle, or comforting a senior dog or cat surrendered to the shelter, our staff and volunteers are constantly healing those in need.
