Ready for the best heartwarming story of the season? Read on…
We have hundreds of animals who come through our doors each year at LTBHS who go on to find loving homes. Each and every one makes an impact on us during their time here, but sometimes, there are the really special ones.
Max arrived at LTBHS originally on a transport from down south, was adopted, and then later returned when his owner developed allergies. Max was once again adopted from the shelter and returned shortly after for being overly active. They say third time is a charm, and that seems to be true in this case. He was adopted once more and from there, the story gets pretty incredible.
Now called Clyde by his new owner, he made quite the impact one evening as he was being cared for by his owner’s son-in-law (who wishes to remain anonymous). Clyde, a normally sweet and fun-loving dog, began jumping on him in bed while growling and barking. It was then that he realized his neighbor’s house was on fire. After escaping the house with Clyde and calling the fire department (the neighbors weren’t home, thankfully), it was evident just how bad the situation could have been since the two houses were only 12 feet apart. Had Clyde not woken him up, their house would have soon become engulfed in flames, too, most likely taking the lives of Clyde and this individual.
He went on to state to LTBHS that, “All belongings can be replaced, human life on the other hand cannot. Clyde made sure that, as we enter the holiday season, my wife had a husband, and my daughter still had a father. We thank Little Traverse Bay Humane Society from the bottom of our hearts for taking in these shelter animals, and giving them a second, third or fourth chance! Without this shelter, I would not be here today.”
We couldn’t be more proud of our sweet Max, now Clyde. We know that Clyde is now home for good and will spend the holidays with his loving family who is all able to be together, thanks to him!

Every act of generosity counts. We know this to be true at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society and this is evident in the caring individuals and businesses that make up our community. Tomorrow, November 30 is Giving Tuesday, a day created to celebrate giving back to others.
Each year, our shelter provides a temporary home to hundreds of homeless cats and kittens. This Giving Tuesday, our goal is to improve the lives of every shelter cat who enters our facility—stay tuned tomorrow for more details and consider being part of this campaign that helps shelter cats!

The holidays are here, and so is the shopping season which means advertisements galore prompting us to buy the latest gadgets, clothing or big screen TV. But after Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, a day created to encourage families, businesses, and communities to give back and to celebrate generosity. It also serves to remind us that the season is more about giving to others and less about discounts online.
Stay tuned for our Giving Tuesday campaign coming up on November 30—we have a special request for all of our wonderful feline shelter residents this year. We are so thankful for a caring community that cares deeply for these animals and allows us to continue to save lives in the community and beyond!

For only $50, you have the chance to win a 12-year-old bottle of Van Winkle Special Reserve bourbon whiskey. We'll draw the winner on Wednesday, December 1. This bourbon is highly sought-after, and would make the most incredible holiday present ever!

A BIG thank you to Bark Nation for stopping by our shelter with a bunch of yummy stuffed Kongs for a special Thanksgiving treat for our shelter pups! They loved the tasty treat, and they will definitely enjoy playing with their Kongs afterward!
They also brought us another very special delivery. Riddle, a three-and-a-half year old Belgian Malinois, was brought to our shelter for the chance to find a new loving family up north. Riddle has been in their care for nearly two years due to an ongoing cruelty investigation. This special girl will likely be available for adoption next week, so stay tuned for details!
From all of us to all of you, we wish you a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving!

It's always difficult to see older animals surrendered to the shelter (even though at times it is necessary due to hardship on behalf of the owner) as they often wait longer to find homes. Older animals often make wonderful companions, however. They typically already have some manners, are housebroken, and are much more laid back than their younger counterparts. We have found that when people open their hearts and homes to an older animal in need, they are often rewarded with a loving and devoted friend.
Abby and Riggs are our two oldest canine residents at 8 and 10 years old, respectively. And these two sweet pups are looking for a loving home together. They have been together since they were pups and are extremely bonded.
While we know it may be more challenging to find homes for two elderly dogs, we truly believe that sweet Abby and Riggs deserve a loving home where they can spend their retirement years together being loved and doted on.
November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, which is a reminder of all of the amazing older animals awaiting homes in shelters each year. Abby and Riggs are just two of the many older pets waiting for a second chance. We know that there is a loving family out there for Abby and Riggs--please "like" and share this post to help them find it for the holidays!

It's that time of the year--time for the Subaru Share the Love Event! We are so honored to be chosen once again by Subaru by the Bay as the local charity to participate in this fantastic event! Now until January 3, 2022, Subaru will donate $250 from every newly purchased or leased vehicle to one of four national charities including a local organization, which in this case is LTBHS!
We'll also be having an event at Subaru by the Bay on Saturday, December 4 from 11-1 p.m. and we encourage you to stop by! There will be adoptable animals, freebies, and Christmas photos taken by the LTBHS staff (bring your fur baby!). Hope to see you there! I swear I'm not as crazy as my name sounds, I just like playing with my toys, they make the noise, not me! But anyway, my name is Ruckus. I'm a goofy five-year-old boy, and I'm looking for a home where it can be just me and my parents. I like being the only child--(that includes furry siblings and human ones too!) so that way I get the toys all to myself. I've been at LTBHS for a little while now, but I'm hoping I'll have a home for the holidays and can have someone to go on walks with and play with! Stop by and meet me soon--I hope you will. Love, Ruckus.

They call me Fetty and I am a beautiful white and grey cat with a silky coat. I've been living with the same family for a long time but they had to give me up so I find myself searching for a new forever family. Maybe it could be you! My left eye had to be removed a few years back due to cancer, so I am a special girl who definitely has to be indoors only. But this does not slow me down at all- I get around just fine and am just about the most affectionate cat you will ever meet! Please come to the shelter and see for yourself how much love I have to give to the right special person. Love and purrs, Fetty.

We are so grateful to have a caring business community! 119 Studio is donating $5 of each of their hand painted Christmas ornaments to LTBHS this season. They are hosting the fundraiser in memory of their beloved basset hound, Cooper, who they lost to cancer in 2017. Cooper was adopted from LTBHS when he was just a puppy.
Be sure to check out 119 Studio located 690 State St Harbor Springs. We are thankful for their support this holiday season!

We are so thrilled to announce that Little Traverse Bay Veterinary Clinic veterinarian, Dr. Dumas, has just completed her 'Fear Free Veterinary Certification'! This makes her the second LTBHS vet along with Dr. Katie Zubricky to have this certification, in addition to head technician Kassidy Dicus, who has the Fear Free technician certification. All our techs have taken some amount of Fear Free training. The veterinary certification is a nine hour training course with the goal to reduce the fear, anxiety, and stress of every patient that comes into the clinic. It is based on providing positive aspects to the visit such as treats, toys and calming pheromones to counter the negatives such as vaccines and blood draws (which are necessary for good health!). The training course also helps staff to recognize when a procedure has become too stressful to continue and implementing sedation earlier in the process before the animal is too traumatized.
Congratulations Dr. Dumas! We also applaud Dr. Zubricky and Kassidy Dicus for receiving this important certification!

A big thank you to Isabella and Liam who stopped by the shelter recently to drop off supplies for the organization. Isabella had a paying it forward project at Petoskey High School, and she garnered donations of cleaning supplies for the shelter--thank you, we certainly appreciate it!!
