Henderson County Humane Society

Our goal is to place every adoptable animal we receive into a permanent home. In 2004 we joined Petfinder.com and have increased our adoption rate three-fold. Every animal is evaluated on its own merit to determine its adoptability. We have three full-time and two part-time employees, that are under the direction of fifteen board members/directors supported by a 300 count membership.

In 1998, we opened the doors to a new animal shelter building, paid for by the HCHS on land long termed lease from the city of Athens. That building includes 24 indoor runs for dogs, a cat facility with an occupancy of 35 with a secure outdoor play porch. We have, also in that building a small spay/neuter surgery room. In 2003, we completed a new building for our animal control operation and special need animals. We have plans and are waiting for funding, to complete 10 additional, outdoor runs for dogs who cannot tolerate indoor facilities. We operate to capacity 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year. We routinely must euthanize to allow for the influx of animals. We are one of two animal shelters in our county of 75,000 people.
