MEOW Canine Division Rescue Dogs
All Canine Lives are Precious...Giant, Wrinkled & Naked....
With respect and compassion for all animal life, MEOW promotes lifelong relationships between people and companion animals, providing shelter and care for each precious life until adopted into a forever home.
It is estimated that one in every four dogs in shelters across the country is a purebred. MEOW Canine Division serves as breed rescue in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho for Chinese Shar Pei, Great Dane, Chinese Crested, Xoloitzcuintle, and Peruvian Inca Orchid.
All of the dogs are kept in volunteer foster homes while they wait for their forever homes.
The Origin of the Canine Division:
Back in 1994 Kelly started helping foster dogs with a group called CAPS but they were down in Auburn so it was geographically challenging. In 1994-95 a pet store on Mercer Island opened up and Kelly started to become friends the owners Julie & Greta, and started seeing Julie's passion for helping homeless pets too. Kelly would take home whatever Julie would find at King County Animal Care & Control and foster rabbits, kittens, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, puppies, cats, dogs, etc. At the same time a small group was working on the beginnings of what would eventually become the feline side of MEOW. We had developed a huge network of cat and dog fosters and one day at the shelter there was a Shar Pei (Kelly already had 2 Shar Pei of her own) and we got her adopted quickly. At that time in our small group we always had just as many bottle baby pups as we did kittens. Before long another Shar Pei showed up in the shelter pregnant and Kelly was in heaven and so were her own dogs. Peis play different than other dogs and most of the other breeds introduced to the household would fight with the dogs. When the other foster Peis were introduced they loved each other and that is when the light bulb clicked that we should rescue Shar Pei. By then MEOW was such a huge part of who Kelly was she could never leave so we just started the canine division of MEOW and focused on Shar Pei and always and still do take in any breed of pups that need bottle feeding or a mom that needs help to whelp her pups and keep them in a calm safe place out of a shelter.
In 2001 a Great Dane, Kari Blue, came along who was going to be put down at a shelter. Everyone was scared of her and she of them. Kelly walked right in with a leash and brought her out. She sat down and she kissed Kelly’s arm and face. Kelly called her husband John to meet her and Kari Blue went home that day with the Starbucks! That was the beginning of the Danes joining the mix. She was Kelly’s heart dog. Danes usually only live to be 8 at the time Kari was 6 so Kelly convinced John it would only be about a 2 year commitment in case it did not work. Almost 7 years later Kari Blue went to the rainbow bridge and we miss her so much still every day.
In 2009 there was a large raid on a puppy mill in Snohomish County. We didn’t have much experience with small dogs however we just felt obligated to with this situation. We reached out to everyone, even contacting our cat foster homes. With the help of all of our volunteers we took in 18 dogs, including three Chinese Crested Hairless dogs. Kelly completely fell in love with the breed. She started learning more about hairless dog breeds and how to care for them. Before long came Lani, the Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican Hairless). She has captured a big piece of Kelly’s heart and MEOW now is also known for helping those that are “naked”!
