Griffin Pond Animal Shelter is a community non-profit serving Lackawanna and Wyoming Counties. Our shelter is not affiliated with The HSUS, the ASPCA or any other organization and so we are completely funded by private donations. Because we do not receive any federal, state or county funding, we rely on fundraising events and the generosity of caring people. Griffin Pond is the only animal shelter in Lackawanna County. Currently we have about 250 animals in our shelter, on a daily basis, which is a considerable cost when you consider how much staff, food, medicine and supplies the shelter requires to operate. We also provide for animals that are sick, elderly and injured that are in our custody due to various reasons such as owner surrenders and cruelty case investigations.

Our Mission is to investigate and prevent cruelty to animals, promote adoption, humane education and responsible pet ownership. We care for the many animals surrendered to Griffin Pond Animal Shelter to the best of our ability every day until we find them new loving homes.

We know that we alone cannot change the world, but if our efforts at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter inspire you to better understand the plight of these animals and influence you to help us help them, then together we can positively transform the future of homeless and abused animals in our community. With our work and your continued support, these animals are given a second chance.

First and foremost, we thank everyone who has adopted for choosing adoption as the best option! Here you will find some remarkable stories that will make you smile and help you understand why each and every one of us at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter believes in second chances. Often many of us, including staff members and regular volunteers keep in touch with some of the adopters because we all fall in love with many different animals each day that touch our hearts for one reason or another. Bittersweet tears frequent our faces each day when we must say good bye to some of our special friends (who we bonded with while caring for them) on their special day when we get to send them off to a better life.

I wish more people got to see the “before and after” pictures, or that priceless look on an animal’s face when you watch as he/she anxiously leaps into a car to finally go to their FOREVER HOME. Many people ask, "how can you handle working at a shelter?" True, most days bring each of us heartbreak but that "aha moment" is exactly why each member of the team at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter does what we do, every day.

Adoption Policy

Visiting hours are noon to 3:00 pm, 6 days a week -- closed Tuesdays.
