Detroit Dog Rescue
We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization determined to save homeless, abused, forgotten & misplaced dogs of Detroit and build the first no kill rescue & rehabilitation center in Detroit.
Updates 11-7-13
Detroit Dog Rescue is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. We are tax exempt for your generous donations. Our EIN is 27-5299891 for your tax purposes.
There are more thousands of stray dogs running loose in the streets of Detroit daily, and only 6 animal control workers to rescue them as of 2013. Over 90% of dogs picked up in Detroit are euthanized. There are simply not enough resources, funding, rescue workers, foster homes or people who are willing to adopt.
Detroit Dog Rescue was born in February 2011 after the City of Detroit refused to allow access to a network television series that would have documented the lives of dogs trying to survive in an urban environment. There is a stray dog epidemic in the city, just as there is in many cities across the United States that have had to deal with economic decline, dwindling populations and abandoned buildings. If other animal lovers around the world could see what we see on the streets of Detroit every day, we know that they would help us make a difference in this city, one dog at a time.
Detroit Dog Rescue is focused on raising awareness for the plight of these forgotten animals. We use our voices to tell their story.
At this time, as ordered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, we are not permitted to take in stray or homeless dogs off the streets of Detroit unless called upon by Detroit Police & Fire. We currently work with local authorities, at their request, to ensure the safety of the communities of Detroit by rescuing homeless dogs, when called upon by local authorities, from the harsh elements of the urban environments where they roam. DDR's rescue operations also consist of assisting the Detroit Police and Fire Departments by recovering and rescuing abused & unwanted companions they encounter during their operations. Detroit Dog Rescue also takes in owner surrendered dogs by Detroit residents. Although, Detroit Dog Rescue does not have a shelter at this time we are diligently working on plans for the construction and/or rehabilitation of an existing structure for the shelter site all while in continuing to raise the substantial funds required, not only to open, but to sustain operations for years to come. Without a shelter, Detroit Dog Rescue must rely on a network of veterinarian clinics, boarding facilities & foster homes to house the dogs we rescue. With this system in place, depending on the number of dogs in our care, on occasion Detroit Dog Rescue may not be able to assist residents with the successful surrender of their pets. Not having adequate space for boarding can directly effect conducting a proper rescue & rehabilitation. Detroit Dog Rescue also specializes in K9 community outreach to Detroit residents. Our Community Outreach Program provides routine & emergency veterinarian services for residents dogs, educating the residents about the importance of spaying & neutering their animals and how to properly care for their pets to keep them healthy and safe. We also supply residents by offering free dog food and supplies to those in need. We work closely with local, city and statewide organizations in order to educate and involve people in this cause.
In the event you have an emergency and witness a dog in need, we urge you to first contact your local authorities for help as we are not currently an emergency service. Once contacted by the Detroit Police Department, and with the provisions we have the proper resources & space to take action, Detroit Dog Rescue will respond in a timely fashion to assist in whatever dog rescue situation necessary to provide safety of it's citizens and dogs.
The DDR Crew greatly appreciates the support and patience of our fans while we work very hard to make sure every appropriate step is taken to provide a strong, viable rescue organization that will combat the homeless dog population on a MASSIVE level! Your constant support, donations and love for DDR and the pups of Detroit thus far has been IMMEASURABLE! With your continued support, WE WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Shasta is a 40-pound pit mix that enjoys the simple things in life — taking naps wrapped in a blanket, eating peanut butter, and playing with a ball in the backyard.
This sweet girl is both house and crate trained, and knows her basic commands (sit, down, stay, paw). She loves training in her foster home and would like a forever family to help her keep learning.
Shasta likes meeting new human friends (including older kids) but is looking for a home where she is the only animal.
Interested? Please fill out a #foster or #adoption application at www.DetroitDogRescue.com

Flower is our longest shelter dog. She has been with us over 1,210 days -that’s over three years.
She was seized during a court case and given to #DetroitDogRescue and due to some of her fears and trauma she never found a forever home. She is the last dog left from that case where DDR endured prolonged court cases to give her a better life.
Today, Flower is in a foster home, but she’s getting older and she’s starting to have some difficulties with her body. We recently had do an expensive ultrasound in order to change her medications.
We know Flower isn’t ever going to get her forever home, but while she has a foster, we want to give her the best qualify life and top medical care. We’re starting a fund for her, the Flower Fund, and we hope to raise $4,000 to cover her ultrasound, medical maintenance and supplies.
Please help us with the Flower Fund at DetroitDogRescue.com

Come meet “The One” at our shelter #adoptionevent tomorrow, from 11am-2pm!
We’ll be at 15612 Harper Ave. Detroit, MI 48224 with some of our most special dogs who have been waiting for their forever homes.
All of the dogs at this event are “The One”! What does that mean? This is a special event for dogs who need to be the only dogs in their home. They’re great in public, love humans, but some of them have special needs and all of them have been in shelter for over 6 months.
Want to foster or adopt a dog who really needs you for the holidays? Come meet them and let them spend Christmas in a home!
You can see all of our adoptable dogs and put in an application before the event by going to www.DetroitDogRescue.com

Thank you to ALL of our staff + volunteers who get out there in the blistering sun and brutal cold of Detroit to keep our dogs walked, enriched and loved. We have a great team and it’s because of your support!

We just had to share this #ThankfulThursday story with you.
Ava, a sweet 8-year-old who just loves helping the dogs of Detroit, collected donations for our shelter dogs recently! We can't thank her enough for all of the hard work she put in to bring joy and treats to the #DDR dogs.
