The great photograph is of a British soldier kneeling, as he is lifting up a pet dog in his shrapnel helmet.

It was taken on the 22nd of December 1917, on the Western Front during WW1.
During WW1, dogs were often used to deliver vital messages during battle. They were turned loose to move silently to a second handler. This required a dog that was very loyal to two masters, otherwise the dog would not deliver the message on time or at all.
Some messenger dogs also performed other communication jobs, such as pulling telephone lines or cables from one location to another.

Dogs also carried aid to the wounded and sniffed out enemy soldiers.

Dogs were often used as unit mascots for military units. The presence of a mascot was designed to lift morale, and many were used to this effect in the trenches of WW1.

Lest We Forget.

We got Rocky in a number of years ago. A rescuer came to us to hold onto the dog for her for a few days. Well a few days lasted for days, month’s years-she never returned.☹️

We took care of Rocky:, did all his vaccines, 🥰, neuter him 😁and operated on his right and left eyes. It was expensive, 😭and we didn’t get any financial help from the “rescuer” 😱but it was Ok, we wanted to make sure he was well taken care, and didn’t suffer or had any medical issues.

He is still with us and has been available for adoption. He weighs about 100 pounds or so. Is solid muscle, eats like a pig but he is not fat-I guess he has the perfect metabolism-don’t we wish we could be like him?

These and guy and gals☹😔 aint so happy. They just came back from being spayed/neutered and are little bit tipsy from the anesthesia🥺 and also there missing some items.😱

We got another batch ready to go for fixing next week😀😉
