Dobby was initially adopted out as a young pup to a great adopter. Unfortunately, their energy levels and activity needs did not match, and Dobby was re-homed to the rescue. Dobby was noted to be an excitable dog who would often get so excited he would "clobber" his humans for lack of a better term. He would jump up and paw on his human, often bringing them to the ground. It was not a pleasant experience. We had to teach him what was appropriate play and what wasn't. While in our care, Dobby also started to have seizures which required a full neurologic workup. He is now in his forever home and is thriving!
"The biggest worry for me was that Dobby would get along with my Akita (Meeka)," said Matt, Dobby's adopter. "The big reason we were looking to adopt was to find Meeka a play friend and right away, the two of them got along like they've been siblings since birth. There was no hostility or fighting over food bowls or anything that would worry me. Now, the two of them share their food bowls together and love to play with each other in the backyard."
Matt adds, "The constant check-ins and resources given to us from SOSARL were very helpful and let us know that if we ran into any issues, they were there to help, always."

The best place for our dogs to Feel Better is in loving, committed homes, but sometimes their first homes aren’t the right fit, and/or their right homes aren’t yet ready for them.
Hux and his pal Sissy were surrendered by their owners as they felt they could no longer provide the attention they needed with two toddlers and another child on the way. Hux has been in our rescue for approximately one year. He struggles with meeting new people and leash reactivity.
"I heard that Hux had so many amazing qualities but just needed a quiet home and patience to help him see the world as safe," said Samantha, Hux's foster mom. "Not many people have a home without other pets/humans, so I knew my living situation was highly sought after for him. Also, I had time in my schedule to invest in a dog who needed some extra attention. I can’t forget to mention that he is so handsome and such a great size!"

#sucessstory: Lottie was with SOSARL for three years before being adopted in 2020. She had a very rough start in life; she was found in Arkansas emaciated and abandoned tied to a tree. Her difficult start left her with some deep-rooted behavioral challenges. In her time with SOSARL, she lived in several different experienced foster homes, and worked extensively with our trainer to reduce her reactivity to other dogs, motorcycles, bicycles, and children. In 2020, Lottie's rescue story finally came to a happy ending, when her people found her.
"The initial attraction came from her pictures," said Brian, Lottie's adopter. "Upon meeting her we were taken back by some of her behavioral issues but we saw very quickly how smart and trainable she was. After meeting her a few times, we noticed her increasing comfort with us and eager response to our commands. This convinced us that, if we worked with her, she would be the perfect pup for us."
"Lottie was wonderfully trained during her years with SOSARL," added Brian. "The struggles have been minimal."
Without the time, dedication, and resources that SOSARL was able to give Goldy to help her Feel Better, this happy ending would not have been possible. Link in bio to donate.

Monty is a four year old Golden Retriever who came to SOSARL from an owner who recently had a baby and did not have enough time for him. Monty was described high energy but otherwise a great pet. Once in foster care, we quickly learned that he was friendly with all people and great with other dogs, but not at all comfortable being left alone, and also had an extreme drive for toys or grabbing objects that do not belong to him. Both of these behaviors were far beyond normal dog behavior, and made living in a average pet family challenging. Fortunately, we had a very committed foster home who also had access to daily doggie daycare resources. This foster situation allowed us the time needed to fully understand Monty's needs, while providing him a good quality of life until we found the right adoptive home. After finding a good potential match, a foster-to-adopt situation was trialed, supported with behavior support and guidance from a certified behavior consultant to help keep everyone on the pathway for success. Shortly into the foster-to-adopt period, it became clear that Monty had found his new forever home with Jill, who is committed to helping him be the best dog he can be!
"We have adopted many dogs over the years (from various organizations), some with more baggage than others, but we have never felt so supported as we did by SOSARL," said Jill, Monty's adopter. "Their total transparency and expert advice set us up for success. Without that, I imagine, a dog like Monty might well bounce around too many homes and his problems would only have grown worse. As it is, we are so happy with our beautiful funny boy, and he has a forever home with us."

Frances had been returned twice due to some behavioral challenges. She has some anxiety and was also thought to suffer from separation anxiety. Her second home was a busy household that was just too overwhelming for her. She was in and out of the rescue for 1 year before finding her forever home. With the help of behavioral professionals she is now able to excel in her new home!

You probably know us best for creating successful dog adoption placements. What you might not know, though, is that to make these matches work, we spend A LOT of time, effort, and resources ensuring that our dogs’ needs are understood and met, both while in our care and after adoption.
This Giving Tuesday we are introducing our Feel Better Fund, a financial fund created to support our efforts to get better at helping our dogs "Feel Better."
Private families, shelters, and rescues spend thousands of dollars every year on providing food, supplies, toys and veterinary care to their dogs. But what about a dog's mental health?
Just like with us humans, this is an equally important part of the quality-of-life equation that can easily be overlooked.
Can you imagine being a pup who is fearful of meeting new people or going to new places? One who is barking and lunging at other dogs while on leash? One who cowers in fear with loud or abrupt noises? Or one who has learned that the only way to make scary things stop is to show signs of aggression? Now add to the mix that your caretaker doesn’t notice, let alone understand how to help you with these reactions. Can you imagine how stressed you would feel?
The above emotional responses are just a few of the type we see on a daily basis in our rescue dogs. These fears and anxieties are sometimes the result of willful abuse on the part of previous caretakers, but are more often than not the result of ignorance and negligence.
The good news is that there are ways we can help our dogs Feel Better! This takes qualified professional guidance, the right support tools along the way, and a safe and appropriate place to live in the meantime…as well as widespread conversation around this topic to bring awareness and resources to those who might not even know they need it!
We can't do this alone. We hope you'll join in our efforts by donating to our Feel Better Fund for #GivingTuesday. Link in bio.
Santa Paws will be making his special appearance at @sosretailri on Saturday, December 4th from 3-5 pm. All well-behaved pets are invited to have their photo taken with Santa Paws. Pet owners are asked to bring small animals in carriers for their safety and to keep dogs leashed. Dogs must be up to date on rabies vaccine. Their human friends are welcome to join the portrait sitting.
*Walk-ins are also welcome, but we do recommend pre-booking to reserve a specific time for you and your pet(s). Walk-in photos will be taken based on availability of time. Link in bio.
Meet the Nutts! The five sisters are now all in Rhode Island looking for their forever homes.
Coco, Honey, Maple, Hazel and Pea are smart, sweet and a little on the shy side. These brindle beauties are a little over five months old and have their own unique personalities and needs. These girls are working on their socialization skills in their foster homes but will need adopters who are patient and help each build their confidence.
Think you may have the right home for a Nutt puppy? Learn more on our website and apply today!
HUGE thanks are owed to our RI Speaker of the House Joseph Shekarchi for his very generous donation to SOSARL! Speaker Shekarchi hosted his first annual Shekarchi Scramble golf tournament followed by an elaborate sit-down dinner fundraiser earlier this year that was a smashing success, and a generous portion of the proceeds have been donated to benefit the animals of Save One Soul Animal Rescue League!
“This unexpected donation comes just when we need it most. Adoption and foster interest is lower than we have ever seen before and our costs are skyrocketing, but we still have many dogs who need our continued support. These funds will allow us to continue to provide our dogs with the basic care, enrichment, and behavioral and veterinarian support that is critical to maintaining their quality of life while they await adoption," says Emma Dawley, Executive Director and Founder of SOSARL.
Speaker Shekarchi's love for animals is deep and his kindness will help many animals in need and we can't thank him enough. The other animal welfare group beneficiaries of the proceeds from this event include the @warwickanimalshelter and @vintage_pet_rescue.
We’ll be showing off dogs available for adoption and giving adopters the chance to learn more about the pups and see them in action tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 7 pm. Interested in adopting? Join us with the link in bio.
