About MonkeyChild, What We Do and How We Operate

Even though Lizette Koekemoer has been involved in the monkey world, and monkey rescues, for over 30 years now, the MonkeyChild business and project was only started in November 2014, as part of a program to increase and expand the knowledge base and informational resources available on monkeys, and how to properly care for them. With the help of her husband, with his years of software, marketing, and primate experience, they managed to educate over a thousand new monkey owners, and more than 6,000 via our online services, in a very short time. And the demand for information and education is growing exponentially, at a daily rate. Not only that, but on average, out of every 30 potential new monkey owners that inquired, only 5 would still be interested in keeping a monkey after being properly informed, approved and educated. Essentially, this decreases the demand for monkeys in South Africa, and subsequently decreasing the supply as well, which forms the part of the project that aims to decrease the amount of "backyard breeders" and "smouse" in South Africa, who do not educate and inform the public.

As a business, we do not receive donations and we do not receive any government grants. We fund the entire operation through sales from our Monkey Products and Accessories, as well as, a small fee charged to the breeders, for placing their monkeys with approved and educated monkey owners.

Once you fall in love with a monkey, there's no turning back. Doesn't matter what happens in your life, no other pet will come close to providing the emotional stimulation a monkey will. They are people, they are part of the family, and they are not pets. They have an extremely high level of intelligence and require a huge amount of mental stimulation. Monkeys have moods, they do bite and they will mark you at least 3 times a day, guaranteed. These are just a fraction of the information that any potential new monkey owner should know. MonkeyChild provides this service through a 24/7 helpline, and we receive dozens of inquiries every day, from people who underestimated the amount of time, money and work required to properly care for a monkey, We receive hundreds of inquiries a month from people who did not "know" that monkeys have moods and that they bite, and we receive hundreds of inquiries from people who have absolutely no idea how to care for, or even what to feed their babies, because a unscrupulous "backyard breeder", or a "smouse", just handed them a monkey and replied "Google it...", when they had queries about what to feed a 2 day old baby monkey. Our helpline is flooded with these kinds of queries and horror stories, and we gladly help them, we spend hours, days, and weeks educating and training these people, without compensation or funding from external sources whatsoever, and our aim is to ensure that their babies have the best possible chance of having a long, happy, and fulfilled life. This is why we encourage all potential future monkey parents to please first do proper research before you even consider making a monkey part of the family. From the dozens of queries we receive daily, and the hundreds of people visiting our website every hour, maybe a dozen will still be interested in having a monkey and it's our job to ensure that they take proper care of that baby, for the rest of his or her life.

Our Mission, is to educate and inform the public about taking proper care of their monkey, through our informative online website, 24/7 helpline, WhatsApp and Facebook. To rescue and buy as many abused, neglected and suffering monkeys from both uninformed parents, as well as, these "back yard" breeders and "smouse", and give them a proper home where they will receive a partner and be well taken care of.
