Our mission is to minimize the need for euthanizing, to make the dogs as comfortable as possible while at the pound, and to see that our dogs are adopted into responsible homes that will have them spayed/neutered to stop the cycle of unwanted pups that eventually end up in pounds like ours.

The Highland County Dog Pound Volunteer Program is a small group of hardworking dedicated citizens of Hillsboro who have came together with a love of dogs and hopes of making difference. Due to the negligence of some of the county's dog owners, the county pound has had to operate as a "kill facility" because of such a high volume of dogs being brought in daily as strays or that are being turned in by their owners. Although the county pays for the facility and supplies food for the dogs, all other expenses are paid for by the funds of the volunteer program. Through fundraisers and donations, we are able to supply the dogs with things they would not otherwise get. Such as, vaccinations, worming, emergency veterinary care, surgeries, treats, toys, transport to rescues, etc. The volunteer program also opens the pound to the public 6 times per month for adoptions and kennel scrub downs. At the start of the program roughly 5 years ago, the euthanization rate was extremely high, about 85%. We have been able to cut those numbers down, with our current euthanization rate at only about 6%, through adoptions and rescues! We rely on the public to show us their support by coming together to provide us the funds to keep our program going!
