To save one dog at a time..
HAA is a group of volunteers moving dogs from the Hardeman County animal control kill facility. We place them in a shelter that is located in the county landfill, but operated by the HAA volunteers. The dogs are then evaluated, cared for by a veterinarian if necessary, and placed on our list of available, adoptable dogs. All dogs taken in are strays, owner surrenders or breeder throwaways. HAA protects the dogs from euthanasia, adopt them out to appropriate homes or deliver them to rescue groups who can place them. Very seldom do we know the history of the dogs.

Today, National Black Dog Day, is all about loving our best friends with black fur. Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to be adopted? However, black dogs are just as lovable, loyal, and cuddly as any other color of dog! See that picture? Go ahead and say it, ”awwwww!” Who couldn’t love that adorable black pup? But did you know that the same stigma that surrounds black cats also affects black dogs? It’s crazy but true! Even today, there are still people who mistakenly believe that black dogs are bad omens and harbingers of rotten luck. National Black Dog Day, celebrated each year on October 1, seeks to change that. The good news: there are plenty of black dogs to choose from at a shelter near you. The bad news: it's because of so-called "Black Dog Syndrome" — that often unconscious phenomenon, that leads to fewer black dogs being adopted. We have several black dogs to choose from here at Hardeman Adoptable Animals. Our newest black fur baby is Maxwell. He was found by some nice people with a compound fracture most likely from being hit by a car. They contacted us and got him to the vet. Unfortunately, his leg had to be amputated. He is the 2nd dog within the past month that has had an amputation. Everly (the other tripod) was a black dog as well. Between both, Everly and Maxwell, we have spent over $1600.00 If you would like to donate to help us continue our plight to save one dog at a time, that would be wonderful! No amount is too small! Also, please share and maybe Maxwell can find his forever home on this National Black Dog Day! #NationalBlackDogDay #AdoptDontShop

In just a few hours "Darcy's Divine Ride" will begin. This transport is a special one for HAA. Not only will more than 20 Hardeman County dogs begin their freedom ride to new lives, but HAA's matriarch and longest current resident, Darcy, will be on her way! Darcy, also known as The Princess, has been at HAA for two years and one month. She is a wonderful girl who was overlooked time and time again. She came in heartworm positive (she is negative now), she doesn't like other female dogs, etc. She has charmed almost everyone she has met, but no one has taken her home. Until now.
This transport includes a 3-legged dog, a pit bull, a new mom and pups, a pup with a heart condition, and others that are amazing in their own ways.
We are so thankful to all who have worked on this transport.

Here is a heartwarming story about Etta, an HAA dog, from Ken, one of our biggest supporters. Enjoy!
They adjust.
Working with animals is always full of surprises. Also, rewarding.
About 10 years ago, I adopted from HAA, A three-legged Sharpea female puppy. HAA is a great non-profit Aminal Shelter in Hardeman, Co. Tn.
Etta is missing her front leg. This gives less mobility than the rear leg. They do adapt and can have great lives
.
Etta is a very healthy, happy dog. I have few problems with her. A minor problem was, she had no playmates. Unable to keep up with the other dogs, she just gets left behind.
Four years ago, some citizen dropped off a mama cat and four kittens at my house. Lots of money and years later, I still have the spayed mother and one of the kittens. The Mama cat and Etta have formed a friendship. Sometimes they will just hang out. Other times they will play. It is a strange and loving friendship.
Yesterday, I was patching some water hose out by the garden and I kept hearing this strange noise. I finally realize it was Etta, chasing the Mama cat. Etta can only run so far and she has to lay down and rest. She sounds like a John Deere Tractor when she runs.
Mama cat was trotting some 10 feet out front. When Etta needed to rest, Mama would stop and wait for her. Then they began the chase again. I didn't understand their game rules, but they seemed to.. Now, that is love!

Gus update! So far his leg seems to be healing well and he is looking so handsome and gaining some weight. Thanks for all who donated to his vet care!

Warning: some photos may be a little graphic
HAA volunteers responded to a call of a dog in need of care today. This sweet boy had a lead wrapped around his leg and did not want to be touched. His leg was injured, and he was obviously in pain. Volunteers were able to get him to Old Hatchie Vet Clinic (thank you, Dr. Pulse!) to be looked at. His leg is now free of the cord, and he will be kept overnight so Dr. Pulse can re-evaluate in the morning once some swelling goes down.
Right now we are hoping that he gets to keep his leg, but we do not know what his vetting expenses will be. If you would like to donate to his bill, you can use the PayPal link below or Venmo. We will post updates as we have them. His name is Gus.

We finally moved into the new shelter!
12/12/2020
’Twas the week before moving,
And throughout the new house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even a mouse-really!
Beds were all placed
In the kennels with care,
In hopes that the dogs
Soon would be there.
The dogs were all sleeping
In their old worn out stalls,
Not knowing so soon
They would have bright new clean walls!
Volunteers were racing
To beat the cold weather,
And within a few days
It will all come together!
*********
3 years and 8 months ago, HAA signed an agreement with Hardeman County to lease land to build a new, safe, and clean shelter to care for the dogs of the county.
Finally, next week is moving week. There are still a few things to be set up for the safety of the dogs, volunteers, and public.
As much as we have anticipated an extremely proud celebratory ribbon cutting, and grand opening, we feel it will be prudent to wait for that.
I want to shout a big thanks to my friends who have heard nothing but this from me for so long and supported me-and believing we could make it happen.
Here are a few pictures of the last minute things going on to be ready to move the DOGS-the reason for it all.
Love you!
