Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. is founded on the belief that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care and safe shelter. Due to overpopulation, there are insufficient homes for most cats and dogs. Some are lucky enough to find temporary shelter and a few even find permanent homes. However it is a devastating fact that the majority are either euthanized or forced to chance life without shelter.
To support our belief and to relieve the unnecessary suffering of animals, we shall:
Extend every effort to find, evaluate, and secure good adoptive homes for animals in our care.
Provide animals with medical services and behavior therapy to the extent of our ability.
Adhere to a “no-kill” policy: animals shall not be euthanized for the purpose of providing space for new animals.
Adhere to a 100% spay and neuter policy.
Maintain continuing humane education programs and in particular to schools.
RBARI believes that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care, respect, and safe shelter. Our primary mission is to provide sanctuary while finding permanent, loving homes for the many animals that come to us (including feral, elderly, handicapped, and formerly abused animals). Animals in our care receive lots of love in addition to shelter, food, and medical care.
RBARI adheres to a "NO-KILL" policy, giving animals an open-ended stay at a warm, safe place until loving homes can be found.
Note: If we feel any individual/group is fictitious or whose sole intent is to cause unfounded controversy and negativity then they will be blocked from our page and your posts deleted (this does not mean that accounts will be blocked due to differences of opinion, but just those that are malicious and do not support the mission and forward progress of RBARI). If you feel this has been done to you by mistake or would like to follow up in regards to your situation please feel free to contact Tricia McAleer at execdir@rbari.org. To the rest of our friends, thank you for the positivity and generosity that keeps RBARI moving forward.

Percy is thankful for this change at life, as he faces a long road ahead.
Today, Percy is grateful to be loved and being kept comfortable by the doting staff at Red Bank Animal Hospital. We are thankful to you, our beloved rescue community, and our partners at Jersey Pits rescue, for this gift of life with no expectation outside of giving a deserving, abused dog a chance at life. Percy has an upward battle to recovery, but he has all of your love on his side.
We have to warn that Percy’s update is one filled with hope, but it is also completely and utterly heartbreaking. At just 35 pounds, Percy is incredibly sweet, docile and cooperative, despite his trauma and pain. Doctors are most concerned about infection, as Percy has multiple infected wounds on his face, ears, eyes and inside his mouth. In addition to new and active wounds, Percy has old wounds all over his body and necrotic tissue covering his mouth. He will need several surgeries over months to repair all of the damage. Because it is too painful for Percy to eat, he will require a feeding tube. He is so malnourished, weak and neglected that doctors are focusing all efforts on helping Percy survive the infection with supportive care, pain medication and antibiotic therapy. He is not yet stable enough for anesthesia and needed procedures.
Percy’s medical care will likely exceed $20,000, but we told doctors that we are committed, with you by our sides, to Percy and whatever he may need. We can’t let Percy’s story end here – he deserves every chance we can give him at a beautiful, bright future without pain, and filled with love. So, today, while the reality of Percy’s condition is shocking, we choose gratitude and faith, as we thank you for making it possible to turn heartbreak into hope on this Thanksgiving Day.

Rowan is thankful to be alive today, because of you!
We were shocked to find out that Rowan is just 5 months old and a docile, friendly cat. Yesterday, Rowan was dumped on a Route 21 overpass in Passaic and jumped off the bridge to escape cars, landing in the street below with severe injuries. It is a true Thanksgiving miracle that Rowan survived – and only due to your generous support allowing us to rush her to an emergency hospital despite mounting medical bills from all the urgent cases we have currently hospitalized. Rowan has a fractured law and her front leg appears to be lame, possibly from nerve damage. Doctors attribute her survival to her young age. She is facing multiple surgeries, but today, Rowan is thankful to be alive and kept comfortable – she is eating and very sweet with her medical staff. Thank you for making this true miracle possible!

What’re we thankful for? Peaches recovery and YOU!
What an incredible week it has been for Peaches. Just days ago, it appeared as if she may die an agonizing death, with no one to hold or help her. And, today, she is so very loved – with more doting medical staff than she knows what to do with at Red Bank Animal Hospital. Peaches does remain a bit of a medical mystery, as she was in such poor overall condition upon rescue due to long term abuse and neglect. Peaches is undergoing testing for Addisons, IMHA, tick borne illness and Babesia, to rule out additional underlying ailments causing her to remain so anemic. Peaches also has an active infection and wound in her mouth and will require surgery once she is stabilized. But, our special girl is getting a little better each day, with thanks to your incredible support!
We additionally learned more about Peaches’ heartbreaking story. Police were called to a home with suspicions of dog fighting last week. A deceased 6-month-old puppy was removed from the property and passed away shortly after. Allegedly another deceased dog was found on the property. It is uncertain what happened to the remainder of the dogs, but the authorities were actively involved. Peaches was returned to her original owner, who reached out for medical and police assistance.
As you can hear in Peaches’ video, her medical staff are fawning all over her, as one adoring nurse exclaims, “Why are you so perfect?!” And, we at RBARI and Jersey Pits agree! Thank you for making this beautiful transformation of hope and love possible!
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at RBARI. Thank you for always supporting our work and our animals. Together, we save so many lives. ❤️

‼️Urgent – Rescue in Progress‼️ Helpless cat dumped on route 21 jumped from an overpass to escape certain death.
Rowan was confused and distressed after being dumped on route 21 in Passaic onto highway bridge. He huddled down desperately looking around, cars whizzing by without a second glance, waiting for the likely end. Rowan saw his only escape to be jumping off the bridge to the street below. Miraculously, he survived the fall and was rescued, limping with a battered nose. Internal injuries are unknown, and Rowan appears to be in shock. Rowan needs immediate medical care, and most area animal hospitals are filled to capacity.
There is no holiday for the animal rescue community and the horror and heartbreak we bear witness to on a daily basis, so we opened our doors tonight to Rowan, as we desperately search for an animal hospital willing to take him in. As we shared earlier today with the rescue of Percy, animals in need can’t wait until the holidays are over or the last dog or cat has been released from the hospital. They need our help now, and so once again, we ask you to help us save yet another precious life, if you are able. We will keep you posted as we find out more about Rowan. Thank you for your kindness, today and always.
Please use the Donate button on our profile. Thank you ❤️

‼️ Urgent ‼️– Please help us say yes to rescuing Percy!
Percy was found as a stray, emaciated and covered in old wounds consistent with dog fighting. His muzzle is swollen and oozing with discharge. It is covered in secondary cellulitis from old wounds, and he is missing teeth. Percy is extremely loving, docile and cooperative, despite his pain. He is in need of immediate medical attention and hospitalization. Once again, we join with our partners at Jersey Pits rescue, as we work tirelessly against animal cruelty, and band together to save a life. We are urgently making arrangements to transport Percy through emergency to Red Bank Animal Hospital, where Peaches is currently hospitalized. Percy is from the same animal control that we collaborated with in rescuing Peaches.
Animals in desperate need of rescue can’t wait until the holidays are over or the last dog has been released from the hospital. They need our help now, and so once again, we have to count on you, our rescue community, to give us the honor of saying yes to save Percy. Please consider a donation towards Percy’s hospitalization and emergency medical care!

Tucker is being released from the hospital!
We are so thankful (even more so this week) to our community for helping save another dog’s life!
Following 10 days of intensive care and moments where we thought we may lose him, Tucker has overcome parvo and is headed into foster, just in time for the holidays! Tucker fought to live for 2 long weeks, without any medical care, prior to his rescue through a joint effort of RBARI and Jersey Pits rescue. He then spent a week and a half hospitalized on a feeding tube in intensive care, undergoing supportive care, transfusions, and extraordinary medical efforts to save his life. The recent epidemic of parvovirus in dogs purchased from breeders is draining for medical professionals, rescuers and our supporters, but it is most exhausting for dogs like Tucker, enduring grave illness and trauma unnecessarily. We thank you for making Tucker’s rescue, intensive care and recovery possible and standing by us once again to combat this epidemic of puppies and dogs suffering needlessly due to sheer neglect. Tucker sends so much love this Thanksgiving Eve as he thanks you for never giving up on him.
Tucker is seeking a forever home! He is such a sweet little pup who gets along well with other dogs and weighs in at 28 pounds at 4-months-old. Please visit jerseypitsrescue.com to apply (and share!).
We can’t wait to share with you photos of the sweetest boy Tucker being doted on in his loving foster home!

With just 1 week to go until Giving Tuesday, we are almost half-way to achieving our 10K Giving Tuesday Matching Challenge!
Find out how to double your impact as our Senior Animal Care Fund saves more deserving senior cats like Earle HERE: rbari.org/sacf
This Giving Tuesday, RBARI will be founding a Senior Animal Care Fund to support homeless seniors in desperate need of rescue. Cats like Earle will be the direct beneficiaries of this much needed fund. Earle showed up in the yard of a Good Samaritan, exhausted and begging for help. Earle was tired of living on the streets, fighting for his food and desperate for emergency medical care, his body covered in lesions and scars. This sweet guy with adorably big cheeks just wants to be doted on and spoiled after living a lifetime of neglect. Earle is extremely affectionate and docile. He is a chatty guy who enjoys the company of other cats. He lives in a free roaming room with 10 other cats and enjoys the company of his roommates, but is searching for a family of his own. Earle now has a second chance to live his best life and is seeking a loving home for the holidays.
This is the chance that our Senior Animal Care Fund can give to homeless, neglected senior dogs and cats in desperate need of medical care and rescue relief. And, even more exciting – a generous donor has offered a $10,000 matching gift to establish the fund!
Giving Tuesday, the international day of kindness, is Tuesday, November 30th. Your generosity will go twice as far this holiday season, as your gift on or before November 30th will help lay the groundwork for RBARI’s Senior Animal Care Fund AND be matched up to 10K. That’s right, you have the wonderful opportunity to double your impact as you transform the lives of homeless senior dogs and cats! Give today and have your gift counted (twice!), as you help save more deserving seniors like Earle!
To find out more about adopting Earle, please visit RBARI.org

Bella has been waiting for her forever home for almost ➡️ 4 YEARS ⬅️ come January! This officially makes her our longest resident & we need your help to change that! Please consider sharing Bella's story in hopes of finding her the home she deserves.
Bella was surrendered to our shelter because her family developed allergies and was unable to care for her any longer. This spunky girl is about 9 years old and requires a cat-savvy adopter who will respect and understand her boundaries.
Bella has an incredibly unique personality - she prefers to be independent but will seek out affection strictly on her terms. Once an established relationship is made, she will allow for some head scratches and body pets. If she feels as if she's had enough attention, she won't be afraid to give you a verbal warning that is sometimes paired with a smack on the hand.
Bella's first instinct is not to attack or become aggressive, however, if she feels that her boundaries have been crossed, she has no problem letting you know.
Bella will initiate laying on your chest (once a relationship is established) but does not prefer to be touched during this time. She enjoys the comfort of having someone close but not too close.
Bella is essentially the type of cat that requires time, patience and understanding. She will never be the type of cat who wants to be picked up, carried around or snuggled with. Her ideal home environment would be low-traffic without other animals or small children.
To learn more about Bella, please email catkennel@rbari.org. 🐾

Peaches has a special message for you, as she remains hospitalized, following a brutal attack after years of neglect and breeding.
Peaches, “the prettiest girl in a bow,” has stolen the hearts of the medical staff at Red Bank Animal Hospital, and she has a very special message for you:
“I wanted to give you an update on how I am doing today. They did not feed me this morning because I had to fast for my ultrasound. I didn’t think I was going to make it without food! Thankfully, they fed me in the afternoon so all is good in the world again. Today’s bow of the day is yellow chickens. Some people said yellow is my color, what do you think!? I am still getting so much love around here. Everyone knows me! I take walks around the hospital and bring joy to everyone that sees me. I miss you guys, but in the meantime I’ll keep having fun here! Lots of love, Peaches a.k.a Pretty Princess, Beauty Queen.”
Peaches truly embodies the spirit of a rescue dog. So quickly, Peaches forgave humans, who inflicted years of abuse and exploitation on her broken body, and so quickly she loved and trusted us once again. Perhaps we don’t deserve her loyalty and forgiveness, but we are so grateful for the opportunity to shower Peaches with love. Please join us and consider a donation towards Peaches’ continued medical care (and spoiling)!

Happy Tails from Patrick!
Our grumpy (looking) guy Patrick might love to give the mean-muggin look but his forever parents assure us he’s the sweetest little guy!
He’s loving his new home and according to his parents, really loves laying upside down for hours!
We are so happy Patrick found a happy and loving home. Another RBARI success story! Happy Tails, Patrick!

Now that Peaches is being taken care of by her great veterinary team, we are beginning to get a better picture of exactly what this sweet girl has been through.
While Peaches is scheduled for a battery of tests Monday morning at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, initial screenings have indicated Peaches suffered years of physical trauma.
Between the tissue damage in her legs and the many, slowly healing wounds - such as the large wound located on the inside of Peaches’ mouth - the level of abuse Peaches has endured becomes tragically clear.
Clearly, Peaches was used for breeding, tossed aside and left for dead when she was finally too weak to fulfill that purpose.
The swelling in her stomach, which we initially believed to be Peaches in labor, appears to be more indicative of severe anemia, which has led to her abdomen dangerously filling with fluid.
Peaches is receiving supportive care and being made comfortable with pain meds while more testing and diagnostics are needed to determine the full extent of Peaches’ overall wellness. We know that physically, her mobility will remain limited the rest of her life. What her years of abuse have taken internally is what we hope to determine in the next 24 hours.
As Peaches prognosis continues to be determined, please continue to keep our sweet girl in your thoughts. If you can, please consider a donation to help go towards Peaches’ significant medical care.
Peaches needs all the help she can get. From all of us at RBARI and @jerseypitsrescue, thank you for all you do ❤️

Sweet Guppy is on the road to recovery, with thanks to you!
Guppy is checking in to lift your spirits! This teeny tiny parvo warrior is enjoying life outside the hospital. He loves to be held and comforted, eats like a champion and is super playful. Guppy needs several more weeks of recovery before he will be ready for a home of his own, but for now, this little miracle is finally enjoying life as a spoiled puppy! We thank you, our devoted rescue community, for being there for Guppy when he needed you most.
We know RBARI isn’t the only organization asking for your help this time of year, but we are happy to show you the successful stories, like Guppy’s, that you have made possible through your generosity.
We could never possibly thank you enough, but I think Gup’s happy face truly tells you how grateful we are for your unending support ❤️
