When Sully, Squishy, Mike Wazowski, and Dean Abigail Hardscrabble arrived at Roice-Hurst at just 6 weeks old along with 12 other cats and kittens, they were in desperate need of help. They were all underweight with raging upper respiratory infections that caused their eyes to swell and seep, affecting their vision and quality of life.

Luckily, they landed in foster care with a kind person who was determined to help them grow and heal. After two months of cuddles, medicine, and lots of play time, the kittens were left with minimal scarring in their eyes and found their happily-ever-after with new families! The best part? Sully, Squishy, and Mike were all adopted together!

Dogs and cats of all ages, sizes, breeds, and backgrounds find themselves in our care one way or another, but they all share one thing in common – they find the compassion they need at Roice-Hurst thanks to the unwavering generosity of animal lovers like you in our community.

We know that pets don’t walk into and out of the shelter on their own, which is why we offer services for owned pets in our community through our Animal Resource Center – like our Pet Pantry, short-term crisis boarding program, pet behavior counseling, and low-cost clinics – and we employ a full-time social worker to help pet parents navigate through hard times without having to permanently separate from their beloved pets.

We are thrilled to announce Homeward Hounds, our first-of-its-kind collaboration with HomewardBound (@homewardboundgv) to provide temporary shelter for people experiencing homelessness with their pets! This project was made possible by PetSmart Charities (@petsmartcharities).

Ten pet-friendly, climate controlled Pallet Shelters (@palletshelter) have been erected at HomewardBound's North Avenue location! Because non-service animals cannot be accommodated inside HomewardBound's facilities due to congregate dorm-style setup, individuals with pets must make the difficult choice between separating from their beloved pets or risking personal safety by staying out in the elements. The Homeward Hounds project allows houseless pet owners to sleep securely in a private room with their pets – something no other homeless shelter in the country accommodates.

Join us this Saturday, December 4 at 4:30pm at HomewardBound for a ribbon cutting and tours, then follow along on social media as Roice-Hurst CEO Anna Stout, HomewardBound Executive Director Greg Moore, PetSmart Charities CEO Aimee Gilbreath, Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland, and others spend the first night in the Homeward Hounds shelters with Roice-Hurst shelter dogs!

One of our most essential programs – our foster program – is also one of our most expensive. Hundreds of Roice-Hurst pets spent time in foster care this year – including Rosie, Cobbler, and Puff, who were found orphaned at only two days old. Kittens this young require around-the-clock bottle feeding by a dedicated foster volunteer.

Between the cost of essential supplies like formula, bottles, heat disks, wet food, and litter (not to mention vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, and other veterinary care), the cost of saving these lives adds up. Rosie, Cobbler, and Puff are a shining example of how your gift to Roice-Hurst gives the most vulnerable pets a chance at life.
