Brembo is a friendly, happy guy who loves everyone he meets. He has previously lived with other dogs and has gotten along with the dogs at the shelter. He thinks car rides and adventures are the best and can’t wait to be your best friend.

Adopt a Senior Dog Month continues with Pineapple! This frosted face guy is quickly earning himself the nickname ‘’Fineapple’’, for his good looks and even better personality.

Here’s the thing about Pineapple: if you think he’s cute in photos, JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU MEET HIM IN PERSON! He’s a lovable, affable, goofy vintage puppy who is guaranteed to make you swoon. Just like his namesake, this Pineapple is just so sweet.

Pineapple is 7-8 years old, weighs approximately 50lbs, and is easy going with other dogs.

Come visit him at our Animal Community Center in Kona, located at 78-6767 Mamalahoa Hwy, Holualoa, HI 96725. We’re open for walk-ins on Friday-Tuesday from 10am-3pm.

Thankful to our dedicated, compassionate, kind team for treating each and every one of our shelter pets like their own during their time with us.

Our Behavior Manager, Lexi, made special Thanksgiving Kong surprises for all the shelter dogs. Adoptable Mo’s face went from 🥺 to 😍 at the sight of his Kong treat!

Mo is one of three dogs who recently came in to our care together. They were adopted as puppies from HIHS 6 years ago, and today, they find themselves back in the shelter. Mo’s sisters are already getting lots of attention thanks to their golden girl looks but Mo deserves the same kind of love and comfort. Check out good boy Mo at hihs.org!

In observance of Thanksgiving, we are closed today. We are also closed tomorrow for a day of staff learning! See you on Saturday when we re-open for regular hours, 10am-3pm, at both locations in Keaau and The Animal Community Center in Holualoa. Don’t forget - we are open for walk-ins! And both locations feature a retail shop where you can shop for the favorite pet in your life and 100% of the proceeds go to the shelter pets at Hawaii Island Humane Society. Hi friends! 👋🏼 Stop scrolling!You need to meet this girl.

Squishy, sweet Dumplin’ has been living that shelter life since she was first picked up as a stray by animal control back in September. She joined us a month ago, and ever since, has been patiently waiting for a home (foster or forever!)

Dumplin’ was recently treated for heartworm disease and we would REALLY REALLY REALLY love to find a foster home where she can rest, relax, and recover. The post-treatment care for heartworm disease requires low activity for 6 weeks. Life in the shelter can be pretty chaotic and it’s important for the health and well being of dogs recovering from heartworm treatment, that they get away from the activity and noise. Dumplin’s ideal foster home would include cozy beds for lots of napping, lounging, snoozing, chillaxin… you get the picture :)

Dumplin’ is a sugary sweet lady (if she really was a dumplin’, it would definitely be the dessert kind! 🧁🍩) who loves love and affection. Do you have a space in your heart and in your home for this girl?

It happened again - WE’RE ALL OUT OF SNACKIES!! 😱🙀😱🙀😱🙀

And I *think* I found the culprit. Meet Sasha, our resident cookie monster. 🥺🍪❤️ Many of you may remember Sasha, formerly known as Elena, who spent 7 months in our care back in 2019 before being adopted. This week was heartbreak for Sasha and her mom, as she lost her pet-friendly housing and had to make the crushing decision to bring Sasha back to us. We welcomed them both with love (and lots of snackies for Sasha.) We are grateful to Sasha’s mom for trusting us with her.

Sasha will soon be available for adoption - and we will share more about her then! But in the meantime, WE NEED TREATS! Who could ever say ‘’no’’ to this face?? … we’re in serious trouble with those puppy eyes and those tiny teeth. 😩

As you know, Hawaii Island Humane Society is proud to exclusively use modern, science-based training methods with our shelter animals to help them relax, learn, and thrive. With positive reinforcement training, we use a lot of TREATS, otherwise known as ''snackies'' or if you prefer ''cookies.'' Having a variety of treats available at the shelters is of critical importance to the success of our enrichment and behavior programs. With 250 animals in our care, I'm sure you can imagine that we use a lot of treats! But... our treat inventory is looking pretty bleak these days. This week's WISH OF THE WEEK is... you guessed it... TREATS! This time, we're asking for everyday training treats, snacks that are gentle on tummies, and some extra special requests from our shyest of feline residents. This week's list has items for every budget at every price point. So throw us some bones and give the gift of our shelter pets' favorite currency: SNACKIES!

Charlotte is back again with her 6th social media post and a reminder that she is still the cutest. 🥺 Charlotte is full of personality and ready to fill your days with joy and laughter.

Charlotte got a special field trip and photo shoot on Friday with our friends visiting from Canada. 🇨🇦🌴💦 Everyone who meets 5 year old Charlotte says the same thing… she is a SWEETHEART! 😍 She loves to be with people and gets along easily with other dogs. While out on Friday’s adventure, she discovered a lava rock and when asked to ‘’drop it’’, she did! She just delicately dropped it. 🪨🙌🏼 We’re telling you, friends… this girl is a gem.

Charlotte has been with us since the beginning of September when she came into our care with her 3 puppies who have since found loving, forever homes. We can’t wait for Charlotte to have the chance to be someone’s baby!

Vida, named appropriately given that she is absolutely FULL OF LIFE, is one of our newest kiddos to join us at Hawaii Island Humane Society. She was a transfer through our lifesaving partnership with HPD Animal Control Services - and we have so loved getting to know this girl.

She is such a FUN dog! She loves fetch and affection. She will snuggle right up to you, hoping you’ll give her lots of love and when you do, she’ll lean in for more. It’s… adorable. And, in case you didn’t notice, she’s a total model.

Sharing Charlotte again… because LOOK AT THIS FACE! 🤩This is Charlotte’s fifth feature on social media, and friends… we gotta tell you, you’re missing out. (and no one likes #fomo!)

If you prefer your dogs to be on the outgoing, playful, exuberant side, Charlotte is your girl. She is so. much. fun. 🦛✨ She is a happy happy hippo but lately, after two months in the shelter, we’re starting to see Charlotte lose a little bit of her spark. 🥺

We try to get dogs out of the shelter and into homes as fast as possible, but for some dogs, it takes a little bit longer… and we often notice that right around 60 days spent in a shelter, some dogs begin to decline. And sadly, we’re noticing this with our girl.

Charlotte is eligible for Field Trips for Shelter Dogs (a great way to give her a break, even if you only have a few hours to share!), foster, Foster to Adopt, interisland adoption, and adoption. So many possibilities for this gorgeous girl!
