The Blackford County Animal Shelter, Inc. is a non-profit organization. We provide animal control for Blackford County, Hartford City, Montpelier, and Shamrock Lakes.

Our mission is to provide temporary shelter, care and medical attention for stray, surrendered or otherwise homeless cats and dogs in Blackford County, to prevent animal cruelty and neglect and prosecute offenders, to strengthen the human-animal bond through education and adoption, and to promote the importance of spaying and neutering to help control the pet overpopulation.


We want to involve the community in our efforts to care for the animals. We WANT and NEED Volunteers - to walk the dogs, play with the cats, foster animals until we find a permanent home for them, help with fundraisers and adoption events, cleaning cat cages at the Muncie PetSmart, caring for the animals at the shelter. Donations are welcome and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. We are ALWAYS in need of items such as bleach, pine sol, laundry detergent, dish soap, paper towel, trash bags, scoopable litter, toys for cats and dogs, metal food bowls, blankets, towels, sheets, pillow cases, snacks for the animals, and really anything that you would use for your pets at home! Monetary donations and gift cards are great as well.

We are an adoption partner with PetSmart. We attend adoption events at Muncie, Fort Wayne (Marysville Road), Carmel, and Noblesville PetSmart locations.

We are very rescue friendly and are grateful to the rescues in their efforts to help us with our animals. We do require a signed contract with the rescues we work with.

We are located at 2520 N. 200 E. Hartford City. The shelter is staffed seven days a week. However, we are closed to the public on Mondays and Wednesdays. Hours for the 5 other days of the week are 10:30-12:30 and 4:30-6:30. Appointments for hours outside of these times and days can also be made!
