How do we even begin to say thank you to our community who truly SHOWS UP when we asked for help and needed it most?! We are just in awe! 😲🥰🐾🙌
On Friday, we received 369 pounds of dry kitten food, and 567 pounds of dry cat food - that's nearly 1,000 lbs of food in mere days! (& this doesn't even include the canned wet food we also received) Can you say WOW?!
Then Monday rolls around... and we're here opening 44 MORE boxes of cat and kitten food!! There truly are no words.
THANK YOU - for reminding us just how much you are there for us when we need you most. And please, don't stop donating - believe it or not, this food will go fast. With nearly 350 cats and kittens to care for, the need will never end. <3 #grateful#community#makingdreamscometrue#purina#fancyfeast#shelterpets
Let's kick off this week in the best way with another fantastic #PetPick, brought to you by our very own Director of Shelter Operations, @megan!
"Bush has got that “big cat” energy and you will learn quickly that he is the boss. And in case you forget, he will chat with you (anyone’s guess if it will be with his meow or his nibbles). But don’t be fooled by his quirky exterior, he really is a sweet cat once he has had proper playtime. If you’re looking for a dog in a cat’s body, Bush is your guy!"
Bush is a young guy at only about a year old, and has been with us too long. Please come visit and consider giving him a home to call his own! #adoptashelterpet#sheltercatsrock 🐾❤

Happy #FosterFriday everyone! We would like to introduce Buffy. Buffy is a 3.5 year old, 10 lb mixed breed pup. She has been in our care for about a month, but because of her extreme shyness has just been made available for adoption.
“Patience is key with Buffy. This little girl is fearful of new people and new experiences. She has come a long way in our 2.5 weeks together, but still has a lot to learn about the world. Buffy is very shy initially and it will take more than one time meeting her for her to feel comfortable around you. Buffy was brought to the shelter because her human mom was too ill to take care of her. She is used to living in a quiet home with seniors and would likely do best in a quiet adopted home too.
Buffy does well with my two cats and follows my dog around the house. When I first brought her home, she was terrified of my stairs, but learned to conquer them by following my dog up and down a couple times. While she hasn’t shown much interest in playing with any of my pets, I think she would like a new home with a confident fur sibling to follow and learn from.
Buffy is crate trained and has had zero accidents in my home! Her crate is definitely a safe place for her. Initially, she chose to spend all her time in the crate, but has slowly learned to explore the house. Allowing her access to a crate in a quiet part of the house is a must for her. She will come out to explore, but only on her timeline. Again, patience is key!
Buffy absolutely loves walks! We walk her frequently through our neighborhood, and although some things are scary (loud cars and strangers), she seems most at ease while on a walk with her foster sister. Buffy has even learned where I keep her harness and will bark and run zoomies when she sees me grab it!
Due to her fearfulness with new people and loud noises, Buffy would do best in an adult only home. She will likely take weeks (if not months) to feel comfortable in a new environment, but with a lot of patience and love, she will make an awesome companion for someone!” – Chelsea, Buffy’s foster mom

Are you ready to head into the colder weather with a new snuggle buddy? Well, we got the perfect snugglers right here! TOMORROW (11/19) we have SIX puppies going up for adoption here at Harbor!
This group of adorable faces came to use from a transfer group in Tennessee and are now ready to find their fur-ever homes! The litter of five is about 9 weeks old while our boy Casey is just over 3 months. All of them are SUPER cute and the sweetest little nuggets. As with most of our animals, we do not know their breeds and can only give a very rough guess as to how big they will get.
The adoption fee for puppies is $325 and includes their spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccines, and 6 sessions of our puppy playtime. Adoptions will be first come, first served with approved application. We do not do holds or down payments on puppies. At this time, we will also not be able to answer any calls or messages about these puppies because of limited staffing.
We will open at 12:30pm tomorrow, so if you're interested in adopting, we encourage you to get here as soon as possible. We expect these to be a popular bunch and can't imagine they'll stick around long! Our adoption application can be found at harborhumane.org/adopt and we suggest printing and filling out before you arrive to streamline the process!

Bush the cat is here to desperately ask (beg - just look at his sweet paws!) you for your help this #WishListWednesday... because unfortunately, we're here again. EMPTY of all canned kitten food, and nearly all dry food for both kittens and our cats. :(
It's a bit scary for us, to get to this point. We're really hoping you can help us re-stock! If everyone reading this post was able to order or bring even ONE bag or carton of food, we'd be loaded up, and so very grateful.
While we need the usual and specific types of food we typically ask for, we are also welcoming other options to help us subsidize our feral colony and other needs.
- Kitten food: Fancy Feast canned, Iams dry (purple bag)
- Cat food: Purina Cat Chow Indoor (green bag), Iams orange bag
- Other: Meow Mix, 9Lives, others you may find or have on hand and no longer need!
You can order via our Amazon Wish List, or drop off anytime and drop in our donations shed on the south side of our buildings. https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1GODYJZEBBL5R/ref=nav_youraccount_switchacct?_encoding=UTF8&type=wishlist
We recently got a wonderful update from Wrangler's foster, and we are so excited to share. This sweet guy has been in Harbor's care for over a YEAR! :( ...
We just can't understand why. PLEASE consider this big guy in your search for a new companion - and share far and wide!
"There’s nothing better than sitting with Wrangler as you scratch his thick neck and he pants contentedly at you, his face split in two by his cavernous grin. Wrangler is Harbor Humane’s longest canine resident, and he’s been in foster care with me since late January. I think people read his profile and see “95 lbs” and “cat-free home” and “single dog home” and think he’s a bit much to handle. I know that’s how I felt when they first led him out to me to take home. I wondered what I’d signed up for. But ever since then I’ve discovered so many wonderful qualities that make this guy absolutely great.
Wrangler is incredibly sensitive, affectionate, and eager to please. He has a lot of love to give, and he’s so receptive to receiving it in return. He is the best cuddler, and when he lays that massive, bowling ball-sized head across your lap, you just melt.
Wrangler adores car rides and is a wonderful ride-along companion. His car manners are exceptional. And although I wouldn’t call him gentle, he is one of the more manageable dogs I’ve cared for.
He does well in the crate, and every now and then I trust him to roam free in the house when I’m gone for short periods of time.
Wrangler likes to keep tabs on all the humans in the home, and the more people there are, the less control he feels he has, so he might not thrive in a large, active family. He seems to be most comfortable with just a handful of people to look after. (He takes his duties to his family seriously.) When he’s at ease, he’s the couch-iest couch potato you’ve ever met, which has been a great quality while I’ve been working from home.
This week's pet pick is a little different, Joey (or Joe, as he likes to call himself now...) wanted to write it himself! Check out what this 13 year old boy had to say. We think he may be watching a little too much Netflix, we swear he's not this intense in person....
"Hey there, you. You don't know it yet, but my name is Joe. You're out there living your life, drinking your morning Starbucks, making your lunchtime Target run, filling your life with material things, and you have no idea what's missing. It's me. You're clearly drawn to me- what else made you stop scrolling and click on my photograph? It's fate. I'll help you get the life you deserve. I'll fill your home and your heart and fill that void of loneliness. I will be devoted to *you* and you alone. In fact I already love you. And loving someone means you will do anything for them. I can be that guy for you, you just need to let me in.
I'll be seeing you...."
Joey is ready to stalk you in the night... and pounce on your heart! Are YOU his forever home?!
“Meet Nell! I love Nell! She has been the Dream Dog from Day 1!!
Wish I knew her backstory, but what I do know is this girl clearly came from a Loving Home. She loves her kennel, completely house trained, knows her basic obedience commands, and has been the best dog I've ever known to walk on leash.
She's a little quiet and timid meeting new people, but given a little time she warms up to everyone who has the privilege to meet her.
She'd rather be cuddled up on the couch than anywhere else, and she's as equally happy to be cuddled up with you or not. She sits for treats and takes them gently.
If you know someone who wants an easy, "lazy" dog, they need to meet Nell. She comes house and family ready without work! Lol, probably not the best way to say it but she doesn't need a lot of effort. She's low-key, low-maintenance dog...just wants her person for belly rubs, cuddles, and a gentle tug of war!” - Nell’s foster Mom. 🙂 ❤️🐾 #fosteringsaveslives#adoptashelterpet

How cute is this crazy pup?! Daphne is a high energy wild-child that absolutely loves to play! Her favorite activities include going for car rides, hunting unicorns (or any toy for that matter 🤷♀️), and going on walks. Daphne would do best in a single pet home where she can have all the attention and play time. Daphne is about 2.5 years old and originally came to us from an overcrowded Tennessee shelter back in April. This sweet girl has spent too long in a kennel and is hoping the right family comes along for her soon! ❤️❤️❤️ #AdoptMe#ShelterDog#DogsOfInstagram#WildChild#Playtime#HarborHumaneSociety

We wrapped up another fantastic day of moving our Harbor Humane Resale Store yesterday, and need to give the most massive shout out to our friends at @boerstransfer for all of their help! This team of TWO moved FOUR truckloads in only 4 hours (yes, you read that right)!
We are beyond grateful for their generosity in donating their time and efforts to help us get it done. Working with their team was not only fun, but a breeze - please check them out for any of your moving or storage needs!
Our old space is now empty, which is a very bittersweet feeling for everyone... we'll be spending the next week getting the new space prepped and ready for our Grand Opening at 716 Chicago Drive #200 on Saturday, November 20th, and hope to see you then!
