Hurley, New Mexico Animal Shelter

The Hurley Animal Shelter is a municipal shelter, and since 2013, we have adopted out 98% of our animals.

SHELTER UPDATE: Our brand new animal shelter, located at the south end of Hurley, is almost finished. If you are interested in seeing one of our dogs up for adoption, please call (575) 537-3220 and ask for the animal control officer.

It has been a long, slow journey but when we are having to rely on donated labor and materials, progress is in "fits and starts". The inside of the new shelter is finished enough to house our dogs; we now have cat cages too (we had no capacity for cats previously). The exterior of the shelter only needs an external fence and outdoor runs. We are currently lining up a contractor to construct our external fence.

Money donations toward our external fence - a key feature for safety and security - is desperately needed. A grand opening is being planned later this year and will be advertised on this page a well as local newspapers. Thanks to all of you for your patience as we know you have been eagerly awaiting the opening.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who is or has contributed to our new shelter in any way. Without your caring actions, this new shelter wouldn't have been possible and animals would have been relegated to the 60- or 70-year old shelter we had before.

We want to thank the Hurley Pride Committee (HPC), SaVanne Kilgore, President. The HPC acted as the shelter's fiscal agent (a very tough job) and everyone above went to bat for the new shelter during planning and construction to keep progress moving forward till it was, for the most part, completed. The new animal shelter could not have become a reality without their devotion and follow-through, Thank you.
