Winnsboro Animal Shelter History

In 1997, the City of Winnsboro planned and built a 1700 square foot animal shelter to handle the increasing volume of neglected and unwanted animals. The shelter was started with a $10,000.00 donation and opened, and continues today, as a certified quarantine facility and is inspected annually by the State of Texas Health Department. The shelter is located on 5 acres of land to allow for growth. Two other Texas cities have used the Winnsboro Shelter plan as a model for their shelters, Jefferson and Bonham, Texas.

The Shelter currently has 15 indoor dog runs (eight runs measure 3’ x 8’, seven runs measure 3’ x 5’) and 9 feline cages. The shelter handles approximately 1000 – 1200 plus animals each year.

The Shelter quarantine/exam room has just been updated with a 5 unit stainless steel cage bank and a stainless steel exam table. Funds for these items came from the annual garage sale that we have in the spring.

In 2010, approximately 70% of the Shelter animals were adopted, 20% were moved to other shelter programs in East Texas and Colorado and 10% were euthanized due to illness or injury. The Shelter is working to increase the adoption percentage within the area thru advertising and promotions.
